Different Test Methods To Determine The Abrasion Resistance Of Textile

In the laboratory, the resistance of textile materials to abrasion as measured on a testing machine is generally only one of several factors contributing to wear performance or durability as experienced in the actual use of the material. While “abrasion resistance” (often stated in terms of the number of cycles on a specified machine, using a specified technique to produce a specified degree or amount of abrasion) and “durability” (defined as the ability to withstand deterioration or wearing out in use, including the effects of abrasion) frequently are related, the relationship varies with different end uses, and different factors may be necessary in any calculation of predicted durability from specific abrasion data. The test method can be used to evaluate the amount of material removed from the sample (smudge or crock). Testing focuses on determining the amount of material deposited on the crockmeter cloth or redeposited in a new location on the sample. The test method can also be employed to measure performance characteristics for a product. The user should select test equipment which is appropriate for measuring the abrasion to the samples. Samples are tested before and after rubbing and comparisons of results made. In this test method product performance evaluations are optional. There are different test methods to determine the abrasion resistance of textile subjected to number of various types of abrasion. There are number of different tests used in various countries and it is clear that there is no single test that adequately measures the abrasion resistance of textile under all conditions. This following covers the summary and classification of the various abrasion tests which are listed below. ASTM Standards: D 123 Terminology Relating to Textiles2 D 1776 Practice for Conditioning and Testing Textiles2 D 3597 Specification for Woven Upholstery Fabrics—Plain, Tufted, or Flocked3 D 3884 Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Rotary Platform, Double Head Method)3 D 3885 Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Flexing and Abrasion Method)3 D 3886 Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Inflated Diaphragm Method)3 D 4158 Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Uniform Abrasion Method)3 D 4966 Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Martindale Abrasion Tester)3 D 5034 Test Method for Breaking Strength and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Grab Method)3 D 5035 Test Method for Breaking Strength and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Strip Method)3 AATCC Standard: AATCC 93 Abrasion Resistance of Fabrics: Accelerotor Method
